Burjeel Hospital launched the first Burjeel Neuro Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Center (BNRPC)

07 January 2016
Burjeel Hospital, the region's premier private tertiary care hospital, launched the first Burjeel Neuro Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Center (BNRPC), which will benefit thousands of people in the UAE who are suffering from debilitating neurological and orthopedic conditions severely affecting their quality of life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than a billion people living with neurological and orthopedic issues globally. Both locally and internationally, these numbers are set to rise as a result of factors such as aging population and improved life expectancy.

Multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition whereby the immune cells attack the brain and spinal cord, is on the increase in the UAE. According to a survey conducted by the MS International Federation, there were almost 1,500 MS patients in the UAE in 2013, compared with just 219 in 2008, an 85.4 % increase in 5 years.

There are 15 million people worldwide who suffer a stroke each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stroke is the second leading cause of death for people above the age of 60 years, and the fifth leading cause in people aged 15 to 59 years old.

Every year, in UAE between 7,000 and 8,000 people suffer from a stroke. It is a leading cause of death, and in the UAE, it is the second leading cause of disability. Disability may include loss of vision and / or speech, paralysis and confusion.

The combined effects of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the incidence of stroke highlight a gap in the current spectrum of medical services which Burjeel can bridge.

Burjeel Neuro Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Center will offer high quality care and convenience for patients with neurological conditions such as strokes, traumatic brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and sports injuries. It aims to provide comprehensive service with specialist physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and clinical psychologist supported by trained nurses.

The center will offer a wide range of specialized rehabilitation therapies including partial weight bearing treadmills for early neurological rehabilitation, visual and robotic-assisted training, and balance training systems and electrotherapies. Keeping in line with the Burjeel brand promise, the center will be fitted with state-of-the-art technologies and all medical staff bring with them world- class expertise.

Commenting on the announcement, Clancey Po, CEO of Burjeel Hospital said: "The launch of Burjeel Neuro Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Center forms a key part of Burjeel's plans to meet the growing medical demands of the UAE population. As a healthcare provider, we hope to reduce the exodus of expats and Emiratis alike travelling abroad for medical care by offering them world renowned physicians, the latest technology, and world-class facilities. When a patient travels abroad for treatment, it is likely they will incur high costs. We hope by bringing a facility of high standards to the country, we can reduce these costs and provide them with quality healing environment."

Neurological conditions result from damage to the brain, spinal column or nerves, caused by illness or injury. There are more than 600 recognized conditions, which vary in the type of symptoms experienced, and the acute, chronic, remissive or degenerative nature of the condition and they can affect anyone.

Adding further to this, Srividya Iyer, Specialist – Physiotherapy at BNRPC said "We are committed towards delivering the highest levels of rehabilitation to help patients achieve their maximum functional potential at the soonest time in the most convenient set-up possible"
